District staff outline Cognia systems accreditation visit planned for November

Chad, the district assistant superintendent, told the board the district will host a Cognia systems accreditation review in early November and that the visit will include roughly a 10-member external review team conducting school visits, classroom observations, focus groups and district interviews over four days. "Cognia, which is a nongovernmental nonprofit organization made up of educators, is our...organization that oversees our accreditation process," Chad said.

Chad outlined the accreditation structure as a standards-based review across four key characteristics (culture, leadership, engagement and growth of learning) and said the district has spent the last year collecting and analyzing evidence against 31 standards. He described evidence sources the team will review: documentation (strategic plan, policies, school success plans), observations (Elliott classroom observations), surveys and academic/nonacademic performance data.

The team will seek to verify district self-assessments and provide a comprehensive report with findings and improvement next steps after the visit. Chad said Cognia will be on-site beginning Sunday and will work through the week, providing initial verbal feedback on the final morning; the official report arrives later. Board interviews are tentatively scheduled for October and can be arranged virtually or in small groups. Chad invited board participation in interviews and said staff will provide schedules and materials.

Why it matters: Systems accreditation provides an external validation and a broad, evidence-based review of district operations and instruction; results can highlight strengths and gaps and inform district improvement plans.
