Perkiomen Valley School District administrators told the policy committee they will incorporate Constitution Day and several other state-requested observances into district curriculum documents and share resources with principals.
Superintendent Doctor Russell said the district had received late guidance from the legislature and PNN about several days the district must observe, including Constitution Day (Sept. 17), Frances Willard Day (Sept. 28), William Penn Day (around Oct. 24), Bill of Rights week (December), Public School Day (April) and Arbor Day. He said principals had been informed and curriculum supervisors would help develop age-appropriate activities. "We'll take steps to do that. Other and even if we don't have the policy approved, we will uphold these new regulations because we've been informed of them," Russell said.
District leaders agreed to provide building-level guidance and suggested curriculum supervisors would compile materials that teachers can use without creating an undue burden on classroom instruction. The superintendent said he will include the updates in a community newsletter and cover the new observances in his superintendent's report to the board.
Action: administration will provide curricular resources and guidance to principals and will report back to the education committee and full board on implementation plans.
