Board hears drop in incoming first-grade enrollment; district to monitor

District administrative staff reported the district is largely flat overall but highlighted a decline in the incoming first-grade class. "We ended the year at a 171. But if you take 18 of those were super k, so it's 153. So this year's first grade is 141," a district staff member said during the meeting.
Staff described a roughly 12-student difference between last year's kindergarten cohort and this year's first grade and said the kindergarten count remains uncertain until enrollment stabilizes. The speaker noted several other grades showed modest increases — fourth grade up one, fifth up five and second grade up four — but the loss in first grade offsets those gains.
Board members and staff agreed to watch enrollment trends. A district staff member said staff often see shifts over the school year and that a change of about 10 students can have meaningful budget implications.
The district did not report a cause for the drop during the meeting and offered no immediate policy changes; staff said they will monitor enrollment and report back.
