Board reviews track-and-field layout options, staff to schedule work session to finalize specs
Summary

District staff presented revised track-and-field specifications and site layouts for facilities behind the high school football field and asked the board to review options before moving to bid.
Staff explained the constraints of the space behind the baseball field: discus and shot-put areas would require earthwork and a protective cage; pole vault and long jump cannot occupy the same small footprint if both are to be used concurrently, and placing one facility in the back-of-field area would shut the track lane during that event. "You can't do both, and you can't get 2 lanes," staff said about pole vault and long jump in the same area.
Staff noted one alternative was to use the front grassy area of the school for some field events, but that would split track meets between two locations and could complicate meet logistics. They also noted drainage, existing manholes and fencing would affect final siting and would require dirt work or hardscape work in some options.
The staff recommendation was to convene a short work session with coaches and administrators to review the measured renderings and make a final decision on the specifications before proceeding to bid. A board member asked staff to include track coaches in the review; staff agreed to set a work session and to include the designer and track coaches in that meeting.
No procurement decision or contract award was made at the meeting; staff said the next steps are a site work session and a final specification for the board to approve before advertising bids.
