Alice ISD reports 4,266 students enrolled, strong August attendance and teacher-absence concerns

Superintendent Dr. Padilla said the district currently had "4,266 students enrolled at Alice ISD," down from a December peak of 4,342 last year. The district reported that August campus attendance rates were generally above the district target; the high school posted 94.20% for August and multiple elementary campuses reported attendance above 95%.
Student-services staff said the district aims for 94-95% attendance and that August district attendance was 95.28% (a small improvement vs. the comparison period), noting the district lost $97,208.22 in average daily attendance revenue in August this year compared with a loss of $103,967.11 the previous year (staff said the difference was roughly $6,758.89 improved savings for August).
On staffing, the superintendent reported 282 teacher absences since the start of the school year and said the district plans incentives and supports to improve staff attendance. She also described a district initiative to provide tutoring-license vouchers to teachers working toward certification under the district's District of Innovation; staff said the program would support about 62 remaining teachers (after seven recently met certification requirements) and that the license cost to the district was "a little over just $2,000" for the batch presented.
Student-services staff reported enrollment snapshots by campus (as of Sept. 4): High school 1,220; Williams Middle School 975; Newnan 506; Science (school name in transcript spelled variably) 462; Charlotte 634; DeBose 469, with the district total 4,266 (a net of 31 fewer students vs. the October 2024 snapshot according to staff).
Trustees asked about students who appear to have left the district. Student-services staff said the high school had about 75 students no longer enrolled from the snapshot; roughly 30 were listed as "no-shows," about half were reported as attending a district flex program, others had transferred to other districts and transcripts were processed. Social workers were conducting home visits for the approximately 26 students still being located.
Staff also said class-size and facility reviews were ongoing; administrators added teachers where needed to maintain compliance with classroom-size guidelines (examples cited: K-4 ratio 22:1; pre-K planned at 30:1; fifth grade 30:1). The superintendent and staff said they will continue family outreach, home visits, and transfer-address verification to restore enrollment where appropriate.
No formal board action was taken; trustees thanked staff and asked for continued enrollment monitoring and updates.
