Committee reports: Jamestown committees approve state grants, traffic funds and policing hires

Jamestown committee reports on Wednesday said several resolutions were approved in committee, including acceptance of state grant funds and personnel actions for the police department.

Trent, a finance committee member, reported four resolutions: acceptance of $20,000 from the New York State Discovery Grant Program for 2025, acceptance of $8,680 for a police traffic services program for one year, and suspension of the hiring freeze to allow hiring of on-call matron positions in the Jamestown Police Department. "We have 4 resolutions," Trent said, summarizing the items.

Public safety committee members confirmed the resolutions passed their committee reviews. Jeff, a public safety committee member, said the $20,000 State Discovery Grant "passed" and the $8,680 traffic-services grant "passed." He also said the matron hiring item passed through public safety for committee approval.

Committee members described the matron positions as civilian, primarily female staff called on an on-call list to work with female detainees in the jail; they said matrons are not police officers but civilian employees who supervise female arrestees while still under the supervision of uniformed officers in the booking area.

The committees also reported an amended resolution on school resource officers to cover Sept. 1 through June 2026 and approved a street-closure request for a private event on Pine Street on Oct. 11, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.

None of the committee reports included a full council roll-call vote in the transcript; committee members said the resolutions had passed committee review and will proceed according to council rules.
