Bennington earns Special Olympics National Banner recognition for unified programming

Bennington Public Schools told the board Sept. 8 that the district’s unified programming has earned a National Banner award from Special Olympics, placing Bennington among a network of districts recognized for inclusive school climate and sustained unified sports.
Presenters said Bennington is one of roughly 207 districts nationwide and 34 in Nebraska to hold the status. The award recognizes work across 10 standards, including inclusive school climate, student leadership, sustainable programming and unified sports participation. The district cited successful unified track and bowling programs and a large community turnout for a recently held inclusive celebration and basketball game.
Officials described the award as a multiyear commitment; the district will reapply in four years and must demonstrate continued adherence to the standards. Board members were invited to attend “Games on the Green,” an inclusive event expected to host more than 200 students and peer partners, and district staff said the event helps sustain participation and community support.
District staff credited collaboration across special‑education staff, coaches and volunteers and said they will continue work to expand unified offerings and secure long‑term, sustainable funding and coaching pipelines.
