Bennington administrators report staff recruiting push; one certified opening and several support vacancies remain

Bennington Public Schools told the board Sept. 8 it is actively recruiting staff after a busy start to the year and a high turnout at a regional job fair.
Assistant Superintendent Matt Lunekamp reported the district attended a Wayne State College job fair and said the event produced more than 50 candidate contacts, including student teaching and practicum interest. Lunekamp said the district hopes that placing candidates with Bennington teachers for practicums and student teaching will help convert them to hires once positions become available.
Lunekamp reported one certified opening — a science position the district has not filled — and several classified openings. He told the board there were three open bus‑driver positions and multiple openings in food service (the count fluctuated as hires occurred during the week). The district said it would continue targeted outreach, use Indeed ads and pursue additional college job fairs to fill remaining vacancies.
Board members asked about hiring timelines and whether the district would consider semester hires; staff said a mid‑year hire for a new graduate could be considered if the candidate fit district needs and the position had been budgeted.
Lunekamp said the district had already made some recent hires and would report updates as recruitments conclude.
