Franklin names Walter Denton assistant city administrator for community and economic development; start date Oct. 13

The Franklin city administration announced on Aug. 26 the appointment of Walter Denton as the city’s next assistant city administrator for community and economic development. Denton currently serves as city administrator in O'Fallon, Illinois, and will begin in Franklin on Oct. 13.
City staff said the hiring process drew about 130 applicants from across the country and internationally. The mayor (presiding) and staff described Denton’s record in O'Fallon as a long tenure in municipal management and said he led that community through extensive growth.
Staff noted Vernon (surname not specified in the meeting) has served the city for more than 18 years and will retire by the end of the year; there will be an overlap period to facilitate transition. A formal announcement was promised to follow in the days after the meeting.
In the same remarks, staff shared public engagement opportunities: a preservation-plan community meeting was scheduled the next evening, Sept. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Eastern Flank Battlefield event center, and an open house for new apparatus at Fire Station 6 on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon, which will include a wet-down of Tower 6, a sprinkler demonstration and a 9/11 commemoration. The city also noted the traditional 9/11 recognition at 8 a.m. on Sept. 11 at police headquarters.
The appointment was announced from the dais; no formal motion or vote was recorded during the meeting.
