Jonesborough approves offer to purchase 12.1-acre tract near downtown to preserve open space

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved making an offer to purchase a 12.1-acre tract behind downtown—referred to in meeting materials as the “moth crop”—with the proposal to offer $20,000 above the appraised value if the property owners (referred to in the discussion as the Mault family) are willing to sell.

Mayor Bullock and staff said the tract is largely wooded, rugged terrain with some flat areas close to downtown and represents “probably the last best hope to have an open space anywhere near downtown.” The town secured a grant opportunity through Community Development Partners and used outside grant support and staff effort to pursue the acquisition, staff said.

The board’s motion authorizes making the offer; Mayor Bullock said if the family accepts, the board will see the proposal again to identify funding sources for the additional $20,000 and to finalize a purchase mechanism. The mayor emphasized the town would approach the matter as a “good faith effort” and that the property owners are under no compulsion to sell.

Alderman Causey moved to approve the offer; an alderman seconded and the board approved the measure by roll call. Members discussed forming an official group to identify highest and best use and noted ownership of the tract would allow the town to control future utility easements and long-term planning decisions.
