Jonesborough approves new speed limits on New Boones Creek Road as traffic circle plan advances

Mayor Bullock and public safety staff described a history of traffic crashes on the route; Bullock said the town recorded 46 accidents on the roughly 0.9-mile stretch in one year before a previous limit change. He told the board a recent reduction in accidents followed the speed-change efforts, though officers still report vehicles traveling at 60–70 mph at times.
The schematic presented to the board keeps a 30 mph segment through the more built-up section, reduces speed to 35 mph through the planned traffic circle and returns the limit to 45 mph beyond the circle where development thins. Craig (Director of Public Safety) explained the 35 mph through the circle is a transitional speed; typical posted speeds through circles are lower and the circle itself will slow drivers.
Alderman Counterfeind moved to approve the new speed-limit schematic; Alderman Jenkins seconded. The board approved the measure by unanimous roll call vote. Craig confirmed the change will take effect after new signs are posted.
