Boise City Arts & History staff presented a recommendation to award $120,000 in fiscal year 2026 grant funding to 44 applicants and said the mayor and city council were reviewing the recommendations.
The recommendation comes from a smaller-than-usual $150,000 revenue pool for the FY26 grant cycle; staff said $30,000 of that total was being held back for a separate American 250–focused grant, leaving $120,000 for the annual grant awards. A seven-member panel reviewed 65 applications and recommended awards for 44 applicants, staff reported.
Why it matters: the grants are a direct source of operating and project support for local artists and cultural organizations at a time when many respondents to the city’s arts survey cited rising rents, unstable earned revenue and competition for philanthropic dollars.
Staff described the panel’s scoring approach: top-scoring applicants (those scoring 40 points or higher) were recommended to receive their full requested amounts; applicants with lower scores who requested between $2,000 and $5,000 received percentage-based adjustments to fit the available pool; applicants requesting $2,000 or less were not reduced. Staff also said most applicants sought the maximum award of $5,000 and that the total funding requested exceeded $250,000.
The panel included a city commissioner, Rachel Miller, who served as the panel’s commissioner representative. Staff said about 80% of applicants were returning applicants and about 28% were new. The review period by the mayor and council was scheduled to end the Friday after the meeting; staff said applicants would be notified of award status the week following that review and expressed the hope of announcing recipients on Sept. 5.
Next steps: after city review, award letters and any follow-up conditions will be sent to grantees. Staff said the American 250–focused grant will be a separate opportunity later in the FY26 cycle.
