Council hears concerns over parking contractor loss of about $16,000 a month

During the Budget and Finance Committee meeting on Sept. 8, controller and council members focused on the city's parking arrangements after staff described a net monthly shortfall linked to a contracted parking program.
City Controller Joy Taylor asked for clarity on parking revenues and expenditures. Staff told the committee there is a contracted parking firm with a fee of roughly $20,000 per month, and that the portion of revenue attributable to the contract was currently about $4,000 per month. The controller summarized those figures and noted the result was an approximate monthly loss of $16,000.
Council members pressed staff on the value of retaining a parking authority or contractor in light of that shortfall. Committee discussion made clear the receiver's office is reviewing both short- and long-term implications and examining contract and revenue changes. Staff told the committee the receiver's team is "top of mind" on the issue and is working through possible adjustments in contract terms or revenue approaches.
Councilwoman Gibson said the deficit "makes no sense" and asked how quickly the contract would be revisited. Staff responded that parking arrangements would be part of budget deliberations and that additional conversations with the receiver and council would follow as needed.
The committee did not take formal action on the parking contract during the meeting; staff said they would continue discussions with the receiver's office and the contracted firm and provide updates during the budgeting process.
