Lorain City Schools board updates student-directory policy, approves personnel and operations

Lorain City Schools Board of Education members on Sept. 8 approved updates to district policies that expand protections for student directory information to bar use for marketing, approved several personnel and operations items and voted to enter an executive session on employment matters.

The policy changes were described by board members as additions to existing language that already prohibited sharing directory information for profit; the update adds marketing as a prohibited use and was identified as consistent with Neola template language. The board voted on multiple consent- and action-list items, heard a superintendent report about the start of the school year, and received a public comment update from Julie Garcia, LEA president, on staff activities and community events.

Board action and votes at a glance: The board approved the minutes from its Aug. 25 meeting; approved treasurer items 8.01–8.03; approved personnel items 9.01; approved policy and personnel groupings 9.02–9.08; approved the two policy updates at 9.09 to bolster directory protections; and approved operations items 10.01–10.1. After completing business, the board voted to enter an executive session for employment matters and stated no action would be taken when it reconvened.

Minutes and consent items: The board unanimously approved the minutes of the Aug. 25 meeting. Treasurer items 8.01–8.03 were approved; a board member asked to abstain during that vote and the motion passed.

Personnel and policies: The board approved personnel matters (item 9.01). On item 9.09 the board approved two policy updates described by members as strengthening protections of student directory information by explicitly prohibiting marketing uses in addition to commercial profit uses; members said the changes align with Neola policy templates. Board members asked whether the updates reflected Neola guidance and were told they did.

Operations and programs: In operations (items 10.01–10.1) board members praised partnerships and programs supporting students. The superintendent reported a positive start to the school year, saying enrollment and attendance were up, disruptive behaviors were down, and participation in advanced classes, arts, career-technical and early-college programs had increased. Board members recognized community partners and noted Success Academy supports and an expansion that will include night school.

Public comment and community activity: Julie Garcia, LEA president, provided a monthly update on staff and union activities. She said the LEA received a wellness grant to support professional-development day wellness activities, will host a trunk-or-treat event (members referenced Oct. 29), and plans a scholarship fundraising breakfast in March at the American Legion. The LEA reported raising more than $4,000 for a police officers’ fund after a summer incident and described a districtwide “walls of love” sock collection that reached five figures in total pairs (district speakers stated there are 20,000 socks). Garcia also announced a planned breakfast with Santa on Dec. 13.

Executive session: The board voted to convene an executive session for the purpose of employment. The motion included an explicit statement that no action would be taken after the executive session.

Next meeting: Board members announced the next regular meeting will be Monday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m. at LHS Land.
