Fort Pierce approves $10.25 million contract for Indian River Drive improvements

City Engineer Mark Derhallick told commissioners the project will be paid from multiple sources, including $3,000,000 from surtax funds, about $2,000,000 from road impact fees, roughly $2,700,000 from FPRA funds and about $2,400,000 in grant reimbursements, for a total package that matches the contract award. Derhallick said the contractor plans to prioritize the bridge work adjacent to the Manatee Center as the most time-critical element of the project.
“They're ready to go,” Derhallick said of the contractor, adding that pre-construction steps were under way and that the contractor would need to order materials once the city completed final approvals.
Commissioners and staff said they would provide pre-construction notices and public information about traffic impacts. Mayor Pro Tem Curtis Johnson asked staff to alert nearby stakeholders — including the Fort Pierce Yacht Club and the Riverwalk — about schedule and potential disruptions to events.
The commission removed the item from consent for discussion and then voted to approve the contract. The roll-call vote recorded Commissioner Broderick, Commissioner Gaines and Mayor Pro Tem Johnson voting yes; the item passed.
City staff said they expected construction to begin as soon as the contractor mobilized, possibly in October, and they committed to advance public notices and signs warning of upcoming closures and detours.
The contract is listed in the agenda packet as bid number 2025-019; the city engineer said the contractor intends to “hit the bridge by the Manatee Center” as an early critical milestone.
What happens next: staff will conduct pre-construction coordination (public notices, traffic plans and any temporary parking or staging work). City leaders said they will work with event organizers and riverfront businesses to limit disruptions during construction.
