The Metropolitan Council Budget & Finance Committee approved a resolution authorizing the Metropolitan Department of Law to compromise and settle the personal‑injury claim of Katia Travesan against the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County for $290,000. The settlement is to be paid from the city’s self‑insured liability fund.
Councilwoman Swara pulled the item from consent and asked why the same sign had been the source of three claims in a short period. Matt Purvis (council liaison) said staff was investigating why the sign kept being struck and that two earlier hits were repaired quickly. Christopher Lackey of the Metropolitan Department of Law told the committee the sign “has been moved since this occurred” and that, in general, the department verifies a hazard has been resolved before bringing settlements to the council.
Purvis and legal staff said the third incident was not timely reported to the appropriate Metro sections, which contributed to the circumstance leading to the claim. After discussion the committee approved the settlement by voice vote.
The transcript records repeated references to multiple incidents involving the same sign (incidents in March, April, July and August were mentioned) but did not provide specific incident dates or the exact sequence of repairs; those details were described as under investigation by staff.
