Committee reviews modest policy updates: military children, org chart and attendance wording flagged

On the military-children policy (policy 254), staff said the change adds children of National Guard and Reserve service members who are required to move or report for service — and thereby transfer between states — to the group covered by the policy. The committee described the change as an important technical update and noted the district’s efforts to support military families.
Policy 008 (organizational chart) was updated to reflect recent personnel and supervisory changes: staff added a director of educational programs position with supervisory lines to supervisors and head teachers, clarified titles in student services (two assistant directors of special education and one assistant director of student services), retitled the safety and security supervisor to the state-designated safety and security coordinator and added required supervisory lines from the superintendent for that role.
On attendance (policy 204) the committee discussed a small but meaningful wording discrepancy in the policy’s medical-excuse provision. The current policy text reads that after “10 cumulative days of lawful absences verified by parental notification” all further public-school absences for illness “shall require an excuse from a licensed provider of the healing arts.” Staff said that historically district procedures have used an administrative decision and additional warning letter — in practice the district has treated the medical note as discretionary and would normally send a warning before requiring a doctor’s note. The committee discussed continuing current procedures and addressing the exact policy wording in a future revision. Staff said the current difference (policy uses “shall” while district practice has treated it as “may”) favors families but will be flagged for a forthcoming policy revision.
All three items were discussed in committee; staff said they would return the items to the full board for formal action or further revision as appropriate.
