House approves temporary vehicle-registration fix for survivors of deceased vehicle owners

The Michigan House passed House Bill 4674, a bill intended to ease administrative burdens on families after a vehicle owner’s death by allowing a surviving spouse or next of kin to renew vehicle registration one time while title issues are resolved through probate. The bill passed by voice/roll-call and the House ordered immediate effect.
Representative Altman, sponsor of the bill, said families can be left unable to renew tabs for a vehicle while title or financing remains attached to a deceased owner’s records during probate. Altman described the proposal as a temporary, limited fix to allow one registration renewal so families can legally use a vehicle while estate paperwork proceeds. “This flexibility gives families breathing room during a stressful period without weakening the safeguards already in place,” Altman said.
The clerk announced final passage with 105 ayes and 0 nays. The majority floor leader moved for immediate effect and the House agreed.
Altman told colleagues the bill was written to prevent abuse and was intended as temporary relief rather than a title loophole. No floor amendments to the bill were recorded in the third-reading sequence shown on the floor.
