Cupertino proclaims National Preparedness Month; CADRE seeks 1,000 volunteers 55+ with AmeriCorps grant

The Cupertino City Council presented proclamations Sept. 3 recognizing September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and as National Preparedness Month.
Mayor Chow and council members cited local organizations that support families affected by childhood cancer; the council said it would mail proclamations to Jacob Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services and to the Ron Neal Foundation (names as provided to the council).
The council also received a presentation from CADRE (Collaborating Agencies Disaster Relief Effort). CADRE’s presenter, who identified herself as Marcia Lehi, described countywide community support networks that bring together organizations in areas such as children’s services, mass care, business continuity and veterans’ services. “The purpose of these meetings is not to take away from anyone else's work, but to actually create a plug in that's related to disaster preparedness,” she said.
Lehi said CADRE recently received an AmeriCorps grant to recruit 1,000 volunteers over the age of 55 to support resilience and disaster response across Santa Clara County. Antonia Bradford, introduced as CADRE’s volunteer engagement coordinator, said her role is to connect those volunteers to the countywide community support networks. CADRE listed a contact email (volunteer@cadresv.org) and a website (cadresv.org) for people who want to participate.
Council members thanked CADRE for coordinating organizations the city cannot reach on its own and noted the city will host a search-and-rescue training in October. No formal council action was taken on the recognitions; the proclamations will be mailed to recipients.
