BOCC approves earlier start for district court clerk position to support new judge

Kootenai County commissioners voted to allow a budgeted fiscal-year-2026 district court clerk position to start roughly five weeks earlier so the new district judge can receive transition support.
Cali Young, speaking for the court, said the new judge was sworn in on Aug. 15 and that the earlier start is “budget neutral” for the current year because salary savings cover the early start; commissioners were told it will increase ongoing personnel costs in future years. Commissioner Duncan moved to approve the earlier start; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously with Commissioners Eberlein, Duncan and Chair Metairi voting “aye.”
County staff recorded the request as being within the approved FY26 budgeted headcount; the motion directs the county to begin recruitment or onboarding so the position is in place to assist the judge’s transition.
