Superintendent outlines stadium behavior plan, phone policy effects and traffic updates

Superintendent Anne Slosch used her Sept. 3 report to ask for parents' help managing student behavior at stadium events, described early positive results from a new phone policy at the high school, and outlined traffic pattern adjustments coordinated with the EPD and Valerius City.
"We're going to be doing robo calls and another email tomorrow, but also making announcements at buildings about behavior at the stadium," Slosch said, describing initial steps to address students running in large spectator areas and "people getting knocked over and hurt." She said the district will place safety associates at events and has a stepped approach: "So this is just the first layer of asking them to stay seated unless you're using the restroom...we're trying the first layer. We'll see how that goes, and, we hope that we can make it happen. I feel good about it. And then if we can't, we may have to add layers," Slosch said.
Slosch also reported positive signs from a recently implemented high-school phone policy. School staff told her that a teacher "has seen so much more engagement from her students." The superintendent said the district paired the phone policy with a new tardy policy to give students designated times and clear consequences.
On traffic and arrival/dismissal patterns, Slosch said the district worked with the EPD and Valerius City to deploy new markings and strategies at some schools. "We have more what we call Ring Road potential than the old Ely did. But what we're finding is we have more car riders than we had pre COVID...you'll have to go around the block a few times, if there's no room in the Ring Road," she said, urging parents not to stop in dangerous zones such as Golf or Ohio Street. Slosch said Chief Welsh is helping with strategic enforcement.
She also mentioned upcoming events (a home game against Brunswick, the Save Our Children gala, a golf outing), and celebrated recent athletic results: JV football and boys and girls soccer wins over Lorain, and cross country teams placing first (boys) and second (girls) at the Bucyrus Invitational.
