Commission approves redesigned masonry wall and artistic gate at 401 E. Michigan with variance

The Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness to repair an existing masonry wall and replace the gate at 401 E. Michigan St., and granted a variance to exceed the maximum permitted gate height under district standards.

Kirk Green of Studio Access presented a new gate design that divides the gate into three operable panels and draws geometric inspiration from existing wrought-iron elements and stained-glass patterns in the building’s windows. Green said the construct will use plasma-cut and perforated powder-coated aluminum panels set into steel tube frames to achieve some transparency while improving durability; a new bottom track will eliminate an eccentric load that has caused structural stress on the existing wall and gate.

Shelby Long, senior architectural reviewer, said staff normally does not favor gates that exceed district-recommended heights but was comfortable with the proposal because the new gate aligns with the historic masonry wall. Long also told the commission staff had received a letter of approval from Landmarks for the gate design.

Commissioner Hanson (commenting on materials) asked the applicant to consider how to protect the exposed steel beam and finish details from ice, snow and future corrosion. The applicant and staff noted discussions with local metalworkers and a plan to field-finish large structural members where necessary.

Meg Bush read staff’s recommendation: approve the COA to repair the wall and replace the gate, and approve a variance of development standards to exceed the permitted gate height, both subject to the 11 stipulations and two notes in the staff report. The motions passed by voice vote with no opposition.

Staff will record stipulations and require final shop drawings and finish details as part of permit review.
