City staff told the Washington Terrace City Council on Sept. 2 that the American Red Cross and a local United Methodist congregation are working with the city to evaluate the church as a primary evacuation center for the city.
Tom (staff) said the church’s board approved use of the building for evacuation and that the facility’s kitchen, rooms and gym make it suitable for shelter operations. The Red Cross will evaluate the building, and staff said the city is coordinating with faith-based partners, including local LDS stake leadership, to organize community emergency preparedness and response.
Staff announced an emergency-preparedness open house on Oct. 2 at the fire station from 6 to 8 p.m., with the Red Cross participating and offering information about free smoke alarms for qualifying households. Tom said the event will emphasize a preparedness mindset and the limited immediate resources the city can provide in a major emergency, noting the city’s small staff levels for public works and fire response.
Council members also heard that the council held a work session earlier the same day on an active transportation plan with neighboring jurisdictions. Tom said staff intends to apply for the related grant program in the next spring application cycle.
Separately, city staff said the Utah League of Cities and Towns asked Mayor Allen to present on running efficient meetings at the League conference; Allen accepted and will present at the conference this fall.
