Council resolves Rachel Runyon Park parking conflict and reviews upcoming community events

Sunset City councilors approved a temporary parking arrangement at Rachel Runyon Park so the Mental Health Awareness Craft Fair can use part of the lot, and they reviewed several community events scheduled this month.

Council Member Wrigley, who is organizing the mental health fair, said she had about 55 vendors signed up — including roughly eight food trucks and about 21 nonprofits — and that the event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13. "I think about 55 total vendors, food vendors and nonprofits and food trucks together signed up. So of those, 8 are food trucks," Wrigley said.

Office Manager Nicole Sutton told the council she and staff agreed to quarter off part of the Rachel Runyon parking lot to accommodate the fair. "We were gonna quarter off for the parking lot for the mental health fair," Sutton said.

Other community dates discussed included Politics in the Park on Sept. 4 for District 13 candidates, and a mayoral fireside chat scheduled Sept. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. Sutton encouraged residents to attend the fireside chat to raise issues in an informal setting.

Why it matters: Council actions cleared a logistical conflict between a religious group’s calendar and the mental health fair and allowed event organizers to proceed with plans. The council also sought to maximize volunteer support and publicity for events intended to serve residents.

Next steps: Event organizers will proceed with vendor and volunteer coordination; staff will manage parking logistics for the fair and continue outreach to encourage attendance.
