Trustees consider converting former chamber building into multiuse meeting space; staff estimates about $415,000 for renovations

LAREDO, Texas ' Laredo ISD trustees discussed whether to repurpose the former Laredo Chamber of Commerce building into multiuse meeting space that could host conferences and community events, and staff presented an early cost estimate for interior renovation.

Mister Velasquez showed a proposed plan to create four meeting rooms, a reception area, centralized restrooms, mechanical and storage space and a service lounge by removing interior partitions and updating finishes. He said the project would likely require interior demolition, asbestos monitoring/removal, new walls and finishes, upgraded lighting and replacement of glass block with windows to allow more natural light.

"The estimated cost to develop this into this would be close to $415,000," Velasquez said. He recommended asbestos removal be included in the budget and said mechanical and HVAC assessments remain incomplete because the building does not currently have active power on site.

Trustees discussed possible uses, including hosting conventions in coordination with a nearby hotel and renting meeting space to outside organizations; they asked staff to explore market demand, possible revenue opportunities and stakeholder interest before advancing the design. The board also discussed whether to demolish and rebuild the site (the building was previously considered for a clinic and a tax office footprint) or to renovate the current structure for immediate use.

Staff recommended initial outreach to potential community partners and hotel stakeholders and a more detailed HVAC and electrical assessment as next steps.
