Recreation manager reports record registrations for fall sports and after‑school programs

Lisa Tovar, recreation manager, told the commission that summer camp served 1,590 youth and that after‑school programs resumed at five community centers today.
Tovar reported strong fall registrations: 392 players in the youth flag‑football league (season starts Sept. 11), about 500 pickleball players across 31 leagues (up from 21 leagues), 749 youth registered in the fall soccer league (starts Oct. 4) and 180 players in an indoor hockey program run in partnership with the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Adult softball registration and other seasonal programming were also described.
“It's a record breaking season,” Tovar said, summarizing several programs that reached their largest enrollment to date. She listed upcoming events including a ribbon cutting and a grandparents’ day and encouraged commissioners to share information about sports and youth outreach in their wards.
Commissioners asked about expanding indoor hockey into Ward 5 and about use of volunteer coaches; Tovar said volunteer coaches are used and that staff will review expansion options for additional locations.
