Lincoln County adopts resolution urging Union Pacific to retain Bailey Yard jobs

On Sept. 2, 2025, the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners voted to approve Resolution No. 2025-18, declaring the county’s support for Union Pacific Railroad and urging the company to keep operations domiciled at Bailey Yard in North Platte. The board approved the resolution by roll call during its regular meeting.

The resolution was introduced by a commissioner who said the county had received outreach from local residents and railway employees concerned about possible relocation of jobs. Deputy County Attorney Tyler Volper researched the draft resolution before it was presented, according to the meeting record.

Commissioners described Bailey Yard as historically and economically important to Lincoln County and said jobs there support local families and the county economy. One commissioner noted Union Pacific and its workforce are “a vital part” of the local economy and that the resolution was intended as a show of community support, not a legal mandate.

The board’s motion to adopt Resolution 2025-18 passed by unanimous roll call (5–0). Commissioners encouraged other local boards and organizations to send supporting letters or adopt similar resolutions; the record shows the Nebraska International Port of the Plains planned to discuss the matter as well.

The resolution affirms Lincoln County’s interest in preserving the workforce and operations at Bailey Yard and will be transmitted to Union Pacific and shared with interested local organizations. The action is symbolic and does not compel Union Pacific to change company decisions; it records the county’s official position for local and corporate audiences.
