Board schedules hearing to reassign roadway drainage acreage to Sheridan after annexation

The Hamilton County Drainage Board on Sept. 8 set a hearing to reassign assessment responsibility for roadway acreage to the town of Sheridan after territory formerly in Adams Township was annexed.
A staff member said the county previously paid drainage assessments for roadway acreage within the regulatory drain watersheds when the acreage was under county highway jurisdiction; after annexation, that responsibility moved to Adams Township/the town of Sheridan. The staff recommendation was to schedule a hearing so the acreage can be assessed to Sheridan rather than the Hamilton County Highway Department.
Commissioners asked whether a formal assessment process or coordination with the treasurer and auditor is required because the jurisdictional change took effect at the start of the year and the county may have overpaid for the current year. A board member directed staff to check with the treasurer and auditor about handling potential overpayment and to return the information at the next meeting.
The board approved the motion to set the hearing unanimously. Board staff said they expect Sheridan officials will request a meeting after receiving the hearing notice and that staff will meet with them to discuss the reassessment process.
