Storey County directs staff to prepare recruitment process for Justice of the Peace appointment; panel to vet candidates

Storey County commissioners on Sept. 2 directed county staff to prepare a recruitment and vetting process to identify qualified candidates for appointment to the office of Storey County Justice of the Peace. The board set procedural parameters but did not order an immediate recruitment posting.

County legal and administrative staff (Deputy District Attorney Brian Brown and County Manager Austin Osborne) outlined options at the meeting: staff would post internally or externally as directed, screen applicants for statutory qualifications, conduct background checks and present a shortlist. The board instructed staff to assemble a panel to interview candidates and provide a recommended nominee to the board; commissioners agreed the panel should not include a sitting commissioner.

Staff agreed to present a detailed recruitment package and recommended process to the board on or before November, and the board voted unanimously to authorize staff to prepare the recruitment materials. Commissioners discussed timing but deferred any decision to launch a recruitment until the board reviewed the proposed process. Legal staff noted statutory eligibility requirements: a 30-day residency requirement prior to appointment and, per updated law, candidates must be registered voters in Storey County.
