Planning commission continues hearing on alcohol permit for Tacos del Unico to Sept. 16

The Southgate Planning Commission on Sept. 2 voted to continue a public hearing on Conditional Use Permit No. 25-02, which would allow on-site sale of beer and wine (ABC License Type 41) at Tacos del Unico, 2801 Firestone Boulevard, Unit B, to the commission's next regular meeting on Sept. 16, 2025.
Planning staff recommended the continuance after the applicant requested more time. Staff also reported the city had properly noticed the hearing and said the project was categorically exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act under CEQA section 15301, Class 1 (existing facilities). The recommendation to continue was presented to the commission and a motion to continue passed on a roll call vote.
Staff member Adi Aire read into the record one written comment from resident Leticia Tovar, who wrote that she lives on Chestnut Avenue in Firestone and opposed issuing the license to Tacos del Unico. In the emailed statement read to the commission, Tovar cited past crime at a former nightclub at the site and said she worked night shift with the local police department and was concerned about potential public-safety impacts.
The commission took no final action on the permit; the hearing was continued to Sept. 16, 2025, for further consideration. The motion to continue passed on the record with commissioners recorded as voting yes: Commissioner Osaeta, Commissioner Valenzuela, Vice Chairperson Prieto and the Chairperson. The applicant may present additional materials at the continued hearing and members of the public may submit further comments before that meeting.
The commission’s agenda item listed the conditional use permit as item 8(a).
