Staff note: Jennifer (division manager) told the commission the event cost roughly $14,000 to host and, despite high artistic quality and positive reviews, did not “significantly impact local youth engagement” in Encinitas. Staff recommended exploring alternative or complementary programming—such as mentorships led by master artists, hands-on instrument sessions, and lower-cost or in-person educational activities—to deepen local participation and make broader community use of the donated Steinway concert grand.
Public comment: Naimae Woodward of Encinitas Friends of the Arts urged continuation of the competition and argued that participation by students from outside Encinitas broadened the event’s impact and visibility. Several commissioners and public commenters urged more local outreach to piano teachers and families and suggested volunteer support, donor fundraising for hard costs, and earlier planning timelines to increase local entrants.
Commission discussion and next steps: Commissioners expressed strong support for the program’s goals and artistic quality and asked for more time to develop practical solutions. Suggestions included targeted marketing to local piano teachers and Music Teachers Association chapters; volunteer staffing models; partnerships with local music organizations; and offering beginner-access sessions at the Steinway to spark interest. One commissioner proposed tabling a formal letter to council and instead working with staff and community partners to develop specific, fundable proposals.
Ending: Staff said conversations will continue and that any future recommendation to City Council would include a clearer funding plan and volunteer/partnership commitments if the commission pursues program continuation.
