Feather River cleanup set for Sept. 21; volunteers sought for litter removal, revegetation and encampment abatement

Joe Velasquez, supervisor with the Feather River Recreation Park District, told the Oroville City Council on Sept. 2 that the district will hold its annual Feather River cleanup on Sept. 21 and encouraged volunteers to participate.
Velasquez said the event, which typically occurs the Saturday before the salmon festival, was moved to Sunday this year for better parking availability. Planned tasks include litter and debris removal, removal of non‑native invasive plant species, spreading native flowers along riverbanks and behind the amphitheater, painting young trees (whitewashing) planted in the park, and removal of illegal encampments. Velasquez noted the district planted 76 trees in partnership with the Oroville Botanic Garden under a Prop. 68 grant and said the cleanup will include caring for those trees.
Velasquez thanked city staff for partnering on the event and asked volunteers to register at frrpd.com so organizers can assign tasks.
Ending: The cleanup is timed to ready Riverbend Park and the levee ahead of the salmon festival; volunteers may register online to participate.
