Commission accepts low bid for 2026 sanitation truck at under $45,000

The Arkansas City Commission approved a resolution accepting a bid from Zeller Motors to purchase a 2026 sanitation pickup for an amount not to exceed $44,050.
Public works staff described operational reasons for the purchase: the sanitation crew has been using an adapted box truck and needed a more suitable 3/4-ton pickup to handle wet or heavy polycart loads and reduce the risk of employee injury when handling full carts. Staff said earlier solicitations produced no bids; the city retrofitted an existing vehicle temporarily and later pursued a replacement truck bid. Staff said they selected a Dodge because it provided lower cost and acceptable durability.
The staff report said the city had originally budgeted $100,000 for equipment replacement; the selected truck and planned bed work (to be contracted separately) will cost substantially less, with remaining funds to return to city accounts. A resolution authorizing acceptance of the Zeller Motors bid not to exceed $44,050 was moved and seconded and passed on a voice vote.
Commissioners noted a clerical error in the draft resolution (a Bobcat reference in section 1) that staff will correct in the final paperwork.
Staff said the next step is procuring the bed/equipment through a follow-up purchase and installing it to meet sanitation division needs.
