Council members praise parks response to drug activity at Westmoreland Park

During the study session a councilor said, referencing Commissioner Byrd’s work, “We had an issue at Westmoreland Park on the East Side, with some drug use in the parks. … We're not having none of that. We're not having none of that. Our kids need to play.” The speaker added the parks team had been pushing forward to get people out of the park and called parks “supposed to be a drug safe free zone.”
Commissioner Byrd (commissioner of parks) and staff noted they are working on a plan to address the problem across parks; Byrd thanked staff for their efforts. Councilors said they received reports and communications from the skate-park community and from residents and asked that staff share details on the repairs and maintenance list and any follow-up actions.
No ordinance, new policy or formal enforcement action was adopted during the study session; councilors and parks officials described the comments as an update and said they will continue follow-up work and community outreach.
