Council approves Purdue bankruptcy plan and manufacturer settlement; county to receive funds over 15 years

The Wicomico County Council on Sept. 2 approved two related measures: Resolution 135-2025, which approves the Purdue Pharma LP proposed bankruptcy plan, and Resolution 136-2025, which approves a settlement in the county's opioid-related litigation against several manufacturers and distributors.
County Attorney Paul Wilbur and other staff explained the pair of measures at a prior work session and at the Sept. 2 meeting. Counsel summarized that the combined effect of the bankruptcy plan and the settlement would deliver $1,039,009.59 to Wicomico County over the next 15 years from the two sources.
The measures were taken in successive votes; both resolutions passed unanimously by voice vote. The council did not discuss a specific distribution plan for the incoming funds at the meeting; the resolutions approve acceptance of the plan and settlement terms.
Action taken: Resolutions 135-2025 and 136-2025 were approved; county staff and counsel will administer receipt of funds and any required settlement reporting.
