Northampton County authorizes staff to enroll in new Purdue/Sackler opioid settlement

The Northampton County Board of Commissioners voted to authorize county staff to submit a notice expressing the county’s intent to participate in a newly announced Purdue/Sackler opioid settlement, county officials said at the meeting.
County Manager Phillips told the board the notice is required to be filed by Sept. 30 and that the settlement administrator will calculate any eventual distribution later. “We received over 500,000 dollars from inception to date,” Phillips said, and then clarified that “right now, we have $409,000 in our account.”
The action simply permits staff to click a state-provided acknowledgement so Northampton County will be considered in future distribution calculations; the amount the county would eventually receive from this new settlement has not been determined. Phillips said the county previously adopted a resolution to engage with opioid settlements and that the current step is administrative: to indicate the county wants to be included when distribution amounts are calculated.
Board discussion focused on timing and the logistics of filing the notice before the stated deadline. Commissioners asked for confirmation of the current balance and thanked staff for ongoing work to pursue settlement funds. There was no discussion of earmarking or specific uses for any future proceeds at the meeting.
The board’s motion to authorize the filing was made and seconded during the meeting; the clerk recorded the motion in the minutes.
Looking ahead, county staff will monitor the settlement administrator’s calculations and report any apportioned amounts to the board when those figures are released.
