Town reviews Sawkill bridge design options; grant could fund engineering work

The Town Board reviewed design concepts on Aug. 27 for a planned pedestrian bridge across the Sawkill to connect village-to-village trails and to improve Rec Park access.
Town staff presented a range of materials and railing styles and noted operational needs such as deck spacing, flood resilience and allowance for park maintenance vehicles. The board discussed trade-offs: steel corrodes but can be durable; aluminum can be noisy and reflective; composites last longer but can heat up in sun. Staff said the span would be "really a 50 foot span or so" and that decking width options under consideration included 8 to 10 feet to balance multiuse activities (walking, biking, fishing) and maintenance access.
Design and test borings are underway and the town has applied for a $300,000 grant to support bridge work; staff said final construction would depend on grant awards and permitting. Officials cautioned that certain aesthetic or high-end material choices could be cost-prohibitive and encouraged residents to review visuals posted on the town website.
No formal vote was taken; staff said they expect to complete design this year and that optimistic construction timing would be in 2026 with most likely work occurring in 2027.
