Road & Bridge reports culvert repairs, ditch reclamation and material usage; striping planned

Saline County Road & Bridge reported July–August operations at the Sept. 2 commission meeting, including emergency repairs after localized flooding, culvert replacements, ditch reclamation and material-use updates.
Staff described multiple responses to heavy rains and wind damage in the Gypsum and Bavaria areas, including debris removal from ditches and road repairs. Road crews reclaimed an inactive material pit (the “Peel Pit”) to source material for edge-wedge and shoulder work and completed ditch reclamation and a half-mile rebuild on Manor Road.
The department reported replacement of 25 culverts, including large culverts on Burma Road that required two loaders to remove and epoxy-coated culverts installed under blacktop to extend service life. Staff noted some box culverts originally built with sandstone and concrete can cost $70,000–$80,000 to replace, but in many cases in-house engineering review allowed lower-cost culvert solutions that preserve function.
Operations statistics provided in the report included about 2,165 miles of road grading, 161 signs repaired or replaced, barricade placements for closures, and material usage figures (about 2,700 tons of SS-5 roadrock, 885 tons of AB-3, 95 tons of SS-7 sand, 975 tons of SS-8 and 650 tons of millings). The department is planning countywide striping and a rebuild project on Halsted Road north of Solomon and said budget usage remains within historical averages.
Commissioners thanked staff for responsiveness to resident requests; no action was required.
