Saline County proclaims September ‘‘Suicide Prevention Awareness Month’’

The Saline County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 2 proclaimed September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and accepted a presentation from Alyssa Jewell of Central Kansas Mental Health Center (CKMHC).
Alyssa Jewell, education and outreach specialist with CKMHC, read the proclamation and noted that suicide remains a growing concern in Kansas, citing state data that show suicide as a leading cause of death among adults aged 25 to 44 and roughly 500 Kansans dying by suicide annually. Jewell said rural and frontier communities experience disproportionately higher rates of mental health crises and suicide, and that access to care is a proven protective factor.
The presentation highlighted local promotion of the 988 crisis line, planned distribution of informational magnets and stickers to businesses, and a campaign to connect residents to local mental health providers and community resources. Jewell offered materials for county distribution.
A commissioner moved to proclaim September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and the board approved the proclamation by voice vote. The proclamation was signed and will be part of county records.
The board did not take further action beyond the proclamation; CKMHC noted ongoing outreach and the availability of 988 and local support services for residents.
