County leaders, Evergy officials to investigate reported energy-capacity messages that affected business recruitment

Commissioners and economic-development staff told Evergy officials last week about 19 reported instances in which businesses were told insufficient electrical service or transformer capacity prevented locating in parts of Geary County. Evergy representatives at a Wednesday meeting told county leaders they were unaware of those messages and said the utility believed there is ample capacity in the area.
The county's EDC director had reported the 19 instances to local officials, and Evergy said it would investigate to find the source of the conflicting information so that future inquiries reach the correct Evergy representatives. County officials said Evergy agreed to work with local staff and the EDC to resolve any miscommunications.
Commissioners who attended the joint Evergy meeting described the session as "insightful" and said Evergy officials displayed maps and data about where transformers and ampacity are located. One commissioner said Evergy's representatives were "adamant" about identifying the communications breakdown so areas with adequate service are not erroneously excluded by prospective businesses.
No formal county action was taken at the meeting; county staff reported that Evergy would follow up with the county and the EDC to clarify the available capacity and the proper points of contact for future commercial inquiries.
