The Grain Valley R‑V Board of Education received a superintendent search briefing from a Missouri School Boards’ Association (MSBA) consultant and agreed on a timetable, outreach plan, compensation range and several key parameters for the search.
Search timeline and process
MSBA recommended a posting and outreach campaign beginning this week, with the application window open through Nov. 30. The board agreed to: a closed review of applications, a closed‑session screening of candidates on Monday, Dec. 8 (evening), Zoom screening interviews on Dec. 11 (beginning at 5 p.m.), and in‑person final interviews for up to three finalists in mid‑December (the board identified Dec. 16 as a target date to begin finalist interviews). MSBA said it would provide candidate summaries, tier applicants (green/yellow/red) and produce a report on survey and forum feedback.
Community input and stakeholder outreach
MSBA will run an online stakeholder survey and recommended community forums and staff/teacher/principal listening sessions (proposed for Oct. 6–7) to “put meat on the bones” of survey themes. The consultant said survey results and forum input would be used to craft interview questions and to communicate candidate priorities to finalists.
Compensation, contract and residency
The board discussed salary and contract terms. After discussion the board agreed to a posting range of approximately $190,000 to $235,000. Board members favored an initial two‑year contract as the default for the posting, with the understanding the board retains flexibility during negotiation to offer different terms to a final candidate. The board also discussed residency expectations; staff suggested a contract clause requiring residency within the Grain Valley School District with an allowable relocation window, and agreed to finalize contract language with legal counsel.
Search confidentiality and finalist disclosure
Board members debated whether to keep candidate names confidential through the entire process or to release finalist names. The board favored keeping the search closed during screening and only making the final appointment public after a decision, citing concerns about candidate privacy and the potential impact on sitting administrators who might be candidates.
Other logistics
MSBA recommended that the district post a concise one‑page timeline and provide regular weekly updates (application counts and process milestones) to the board president and secretary. MSBA also offered to work with the district communications team on a video and outreach collateral. The consultant emphasized that finalists often prepare a short entry plan and that the district should expect to negotiate contract and relocation details for out‑of‑area candidates.
Ending
Board members agreed to the schedule and outreach. MSBA will post the vacancy and begin recruitment, run the survey and forums, and return with application summaries and recommended screening questions. The board will reconvene for closed‑session review and to select finalists.
