Sioux Falls School District 49-5 on Wednesday described a three-year pilot that will place full-time, masters-level therapists inside five schools to expand student access to mental health care.
Kim Sharping, coordinator of student support services for the district, told the board the pilot was developed after an anonymous donor, working through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, offered to expand school-based services. "We have counselors in every building," Sharping said, noting the district serves about 24,000 students and that the districtwide student-to-counselor ratio averages about 356 to 1, higher than the American School Counselor Association recommendation of 250 to 1.
