Southeast Tech reports surge in Academic Resource Center use, expands basic-needs supports

Dr. Suzanne Heising presented an update on student success programming at Southeast Technical College, telling the board that Academic Resource Center (ARC) usage rose to about 6,800 touch points last year and that self-paced materials were downloaded roughly 80,000 times.
Heising said the ARC has expanded differentiated tutoring and study supports, retained all tutors this year and requires tutors to complete 20 hours of CRLA-certified professional development. She described initiatives such as tutor-led study tables, online study tables and “old dog, new tricks” workshops for nontraditional students who need to refresh foundational skills.
Heising said the college is implementing a holistic student-support model using the Navigate platform to centralize early alerts, referrals and case management across faculty, tutors and student-facing staff. In the first three weeks of the term, she said faculty-originated referrals accounted for about 28% of appointments and that early “pre-alert” referrals made up about 23% of referrals in weeks one and two.
She also reported on student basic-needs work: the campus food pantry (Campus Covered) will receive monthly deliveries from Feeding South Dakota, aided by Central Church and a $5,000 donation from the Southeast Tech Foundation; the pantry’s initial stock was depleted within the first two weeks of the term, she said. Heising said Feeding South Dakota requires the college to scan inventory counts and that the organization tracks food by pounds.
Board members asked for context on the ARC numbers; Heising said the earlier baseline year showed 243 ARC visits and that the current touch-point total counts interactions longer than 10 minutes. She highlighted other metrics and services: Jump Start week served 388 walk-ins, the team delivered 31 class presentations, and work-study and peer tutors have been important for student persistence.
The board voted to acknowledge the Student Success Services/ARC report.
