YUBA CITY, Calif. — City Attorney Shannon Chaffin reported to the Yuba City Council Sept. 2 that the closed-session meeting produced a reportable action on liability claims brought against the city.
Chaffin said the closed session addressed three liability claims: Jose Escuel (claim number 25-23), Joseph Grise (claim number 25-24) and John Branstetter and family (claim number 25-25). "There was 1 reportable action at closed session with regards to item a, authorization of the claim and the amount of a $160 was approved by a vote of 4 to 0," Chaffin told the council during the open meeting.
Chaffin also stated in his report that the other closed-session claims were denied by vote. The council did not discuss the merits of the underlying claims in open session; Chaffin's statement was limited to what is required to be reported publicly following a closed session.
Mayor Shaw convened the open meeting at approximately 6 p.m. after adjourning to closed session earlier in the evening. The agenda materials announced the closed-session items at the start of the meeting and identified the claimants and claim numbers discussed in the closed session.
