Council approves Giles Park naming and planning commission changes; waives first reading on rezoning

By second reading the council adopted an ordinance declaring a 164.98-acre tract donated by Tom Giles to be known as Giles Park, establishing its purposes for outdoor learning and youth engagement. The ordinance record cites the city charter’s publication and effective-date requirements: passage requires a majority and the ordinance will be published once and take effect 30 days after publication pursuant to sections 20 and 65 of the city charter.
The council also approved, by second reading, an ordinance amending Section 10-16-1 regarding the composition of the planning commission; councilors noted no substantive change to the ordinance text during the meeting.
Separately, the council waived the reading and approved the first reading for an ordinance reclassifying a parcel from agricultural (AG) to residential 70 (R-70) for property near Gaither and Old Highway 20.
All three items passed with recorded “yes” votes from a majority of council members present. The council directed staff to publish ordinances and to continue editing standard verbiage across ordinance templates as needed.
