Pleasant Grove rec staff to host adaptive 'Berserker Blitz,' add all‑terrain wheelchairs for public checkout

Pleasant Grove recreation officials told the City Council during a work‑session staff report that the department will hold a first‑time adaptive race called the Berserker Blitz and plans to house all‑terrain adaptive wheelchairs at the recreation center for public checkout.
The recreation director said the event, described as “kind of a race, but with people in wheelchairs,” is set for Saturday, Sept. 13 and will run from about 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The course will go through Cook Family Park and include obstacles, the director said. “It is our first annual Berserker Blitz,” the recreation director said.
The director also said the city has partnered with a Springville company identified in the meeting as Extreme Modus to showcase the chairs. Staff said the company and a grant application should deliver two, and possibly three, chairs that will be kept at the rec center. “Well, actually, we think we'll get 3 chairs,” the recreation director said. The chairs “fold up actually really nicely,” the director added, and staff plan a checkout system modeled on a library lending program so people can take the chairs for a weekend.
Council members and staff asked about eligibility and cost. The recreation director said the chairs will be available to anyone who wants to use them: “Anyone. Yep. It can be anyone.” On cost, the director said the department is “hoping not” to charge users and that the grant should cover the equipment; staff said they might require collateral for checkout.
Staff also told the council the outdoor pool season has ended for the public but will remain open through September for the high school swim team. A councilmember asked for usage statistics from the pool after the recent improvements; the recreation director agreed to provide pool‑use numbers at the next City Council meeting.
The recreation director said staff are also exploring additional programs, including potential boxing classes pending instructor applicants, and will present further details at future meetings. The department asked for council presence at the Sept. 13 event and invited members to help on course or to attend as spectators.
