Council discusses multi-year solid waste contract, schedules meeting with vendor

Le Mars council members discussed the city—s solid waste contract and a committee recommendation to negotiate a three-year agreement with annual reviews with the current vendor, referred to in the record as "Vans." Council members and staff discussed customer remedies recorded in the existing contract. Staff said the vendor will return for an extra pickup if residents call and that the recorded charge for an extra pickup is $10 per pickup. Specific complaints mentioned during discussion included occasional spillage from trucks and missed dumpster pickups where parked cars prevented access. Staff noted the contract also includes cleanup obligations for spills.

No final contract was approved at the meeting; the discussion items and committee recommendation will inform negotiations. Staff indicated the new contract, if approved, would begin Jan. 1 (year to be specified in the forthcoming draft) and must be in place before the current service term expires.
