Adams County proclaims September 2025 Kinship Care Month; officials highlight 355 placements with relatives in 2024

Adams County commissioners on Tuesday proclaimed September 2025 as Kinship Care Month and heard from county human-services staff about the county's work to support relatives and close family friends who provide care for children.

Tiffany Sewell, deputy division director for Child, Adult and Family Services, thanked commissioners for the proclamation and said last year 350 (in later remarks corrected to 355) children found safety in kinship homes. Sewell described kinship placements as an approach that helps children maintain connections to family, culture and community and said the county supports kinship caregivers through programs including the Colorado Connected Kinship Navigator program.

Commissioners shared personal gratitude for kinship caregivers. Commissioner Mullica recounted a family example in which a grandmother took in four of her niece's children and credited county supports as critical to those families' success. The board signed the proclamation.

Sewell asked the board to continue supporting kinship caregivers through referrals, programs and community resources; commissioners thanked staff and partners and emphasized the importance of kin-first practices.
