Onslow County commissioners voted Sept. 3 to approve the county’s participation in three national opioid settlements that together total about $10.7 billion in cash and treatment support.
Charles Ellis, an attorney representing municipalities in the litigation, told the board the settlements include a $1.5 billion payment from Purdue Pharma, $6.5 billion from the Sackler family and $1.2 billion from nine smaller manufacturers. Ellis said the sums include cash paid through the state and a portion earmarked as addiction-treatment medication that will be distributed to public hospitals under a state committee’s guidance.
