Ashley Gordonier, interim director of Onslow County Senior Services, said the countysenior center is operating from a temporary site at 4955 Richlands Highway (the former Family Dollar) and is celebrating National Senior Center Month throughout September with a "Flip the Script on Aging" theme.

Gordonier said the temporary center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers exercise classes, congregate meals, woodworking, camera club, puzzles, billiards and educational presentations. Events scheduled for the month include staff-vs.-participant volleyball and presentations from organizations serving the blind and deaf, plus fall-prevention and safety programming.

Gordonier described a multigenerational atmosphere in which members share talents; she said seniors range from their early 60s into their late 90s and that the program aims to increase wellness, socialization and access to services. Gordonier said construction is under way on a new permanent senior center and that staff expect the facility will be larger and able to serve more people when it opens, but she did not provide a firm opening date. She encouraged the public to participate in Senior Center Month activities.
